At 200 m the sea presses twenty times harder than air does at the surface.

You cannot just walk outside - an escape trunk and its pressurise-then-depressurise cycle is the only way in and out, and the water that comes in with a diver has to be pumped back overboard. How to build one is below.

Ordinary doors leak - a shut steel door still lets water through, and lets more through the deeper you are. Only a pressure hatch actually seals. Past its rated depth Odyssey's vacuum barrier is worse than a leak: it stops working altogether, and an open doorway empties a room in seconds.

Vacuum gear stops working at 20 m - a vacsuit, a marine helmet and the vacuum-resistance gene all carry the same rating. That reaches the top of the shelf and no further.

Diving gear is rated piece by piece - a drysuit and a diving helmet are good to 300 m and a hardsuit to 1000 m. The shallowest piece a diver is wearing is the one that decides.

Gear does not weaken past its rating, it fails - the rule is the same at 20 m and at 1000 m: one meter over and the garment stops sealing outright, and whoever is wearing it suffocates or is crushed. Check the rating before you send anybody down.

Walls have a rated depth too - stone and wood are not airtight even at the surface, so a room built from them is simply open to the sea. Metal walls seal down to their rated depth and leak past it. Gravship hull and this mod's pressure walls do not leak at all: past their rating they implode, and the whole compartment goes with them.

Roofs need more support the deeper you are - the heavier the water overhead, the less roof a single wall or column can carry. On the abyssal plain that means columns nearly everywhere, or the ceiling comes down on its own.

The floor leaks too, not just the walls - a room needs gravship substructure underneath it. Without that the sea comes up through the ground however good the walls and roof are.

You cannot farm outside - kelp, seagrass and the vent communities grow perfectly well down there, but nothing you sow will. Your food is hydroponics inside a sealed compartment, fishing, or harvesting what is already growing on the sea floor.

Ordinary weapons barely work underwater - a gun reaches a tenth as far as in air and lands half the damage; a club a quarter, and beams lose the same tenth. A thrown grenade keeps a fifth - far enough to aim, close enough to be in the blast. Weapons built for the water keep all of it, which is what makes them worth researching.

The radio stops working below 30 m - the comms console goes dead, and quest offers, ransom demands, orbital traders and psychic waves all stop arriving with it.

Trade caravans never come - nobody walks goods down to a sea floor. A visitor group turns up occasionally in the top 15 m and that is the whole of the friendly traffic. Since the radio is dead below 30 m, a deep base has no way to trade at all.

Raids reach the top 17 m - up there it is factions in vacuum gear, plus insect hives breaking through into your compartments. Between 17 m and the shelf break at 200 m it is mechanoids and Anomaly's entities. Below 200 m nothing hostile arrives at all.

The planet is divided into tectonic plates - nine on a full-coverage world and fewer on a smaller one, with the seams drawn on the world map as ridges and trenches. Earthquakes are common along a seam and rare away from one, so where you settle decides how often the ground moves.

Earthquakes bring roofs down - and what the wall is made of decides which roofs. Stone holds nothing up while the ground is moving, wood holds about two thirds of its usual span, and steel and gravship hull hold all of it. Anything far enough from any wall comes down regardless.

Tides from two moons and a sun - the water rises and falls, and on a shallow coast the shoreline moves in and out with it.

A coastal settlement can be hit by a tsunami - not often, and the sea going out is all the warning you get. It is enough to move people and not enough to move a wall.

It gets darker as you go down - 10 m keeps about four fifths of the surface light and 100 m keeps a tenth of it, so a deep base is lit by what you build and nothing else. The time of day still matters on the shelf.

And colder as you go down - the water cools with depth, starting from whatever the surface weather is doing. The curve is tuned for a tropical sea.

Every ocean fish Odyssey lets you catch - the ones that belong on a sea floor are here as animals you can hunt. The rest pass overhead as shadows.

Two genes: gills and pressure tolerance - neither has a reliable source yet. They turn up at random in trader genepacks and nowhere else.

The deep is honestly quite empty - vents worth a generator, seeps worth a wellhead, and nodules on the ooze.
