RimLiveTongue re-reads the active language the moment you save — edit a file, alt-tab back in, and your text is already updated.

Dev tool only — a tool for writing translations, not something you ship inside a translation pack. Target: RimWorld 1.6. No dependencies, load order doesn't matter.

Who it's for

Anyone editing RimWorld translation files — Keyed, Strings (Words/Names, combat & social log rules), or DefInjected — who is tired of restarting the game to check every edit. It reloads through the game's own native loading path (the same one used when you switch language in Options), so what you see matches a real load exactly.

How to use

Subscribe and enable RimLiveTongue in the mod list.

Open Options → Mod settings → RimLiveTongue. Leave the watch folder blank to auto-detect the active language's folders, or point it at the folder that holds the files you're editing (watched recursively).

Load a colony, edit a translation file and save. The active language reloads a moment later (debounced). The "Reload active language now" button forces it at any time — even at the main menu.

Tip: developing a translation in your own repo? Point the watch folder at that repo (or symlink it into the active-language folder) and any save under it triggers the reload. You can also request a reload from another process — a script, an editor task, or a translation dashboard — by touching a .rimlivetongue-reload sentinel file in the watch folder.

How it works (and why it's safe)

On a change it does a language-only reload: it re-reads the active language's files (Keyed + Strings + DefInjected) and re-injects the DefInjected translations onto the live Defs. Crucially it does not take the full SelectLanguage / ClearAllPlayData path — so it never reloads textures/assets and never wipes an in-progress game or ideoligion setup. No loading screen, just a brief parse hitch. It confines reflection to a single private flag; everything else is public engine API.

Limitations

Automatic reloads run while a colony is loaded; the "Reload now" button works at the main menu too.

Already-generated names (ideoligion roles / rituals / relics / deities) are cached at creation — a reload updates the rules, not names already assigned. RimLiveTongue is an independent, clean-room implementation, not a fork: the upstream repository has no license (so a redistributable derivative isn't permitted), and the approach differs — upstream hot-patches loaded strings via reflection, while RimLiveTongue calls the engine's own loader/inject methods so the result matches a native load.

Source & license

Open source (MIT) on GitHub: github.com/b4p3p/RimLiveTongue.
