Animals at Work — Plowing

Animals at Work — Plowing mod preview for RimWorld

PUTTING AN ANIMAL TO WORK - You choose which animals work by turning on a task on the animal itself: Plowing, Cart hauling or Snow clearing.

PUTTING AN ANIMAL TO WORK

- You choose which animals work by turning on a task on the animal itself: Plowing, Cart hauling or Snow clearing. Nothing happens until you do, and each toggle appears once its research is unlocked. No training needed: draft work depends on the equipment, not on what the animal can be taught.
- Horses, donkeys, cattle, muffalo, bison, yaks, dromedaries and elephants are ready out of the box, and so is any pack animal from an animal mod. Anything else can be ticked in the mod settings, where every animal in your game is listed with a search box.
- A colonist assigned to Animal handling brings the harness and the right implement, equips the animal and leads it out on a rope, then brings it home when there is nothing left to do. With the Herding Dogs module installed, a dog does the leading instead.
- A working animal is not treated as loose livestock: no handler comes for it, no pen alert, no wandering off. It leaves your sown crops alone and feeds from a trough or from wild plants.

EQUIPMENT

- Draft harness. Leather, required for every draft task. Its condition shows on the animal's inspect panel, and an alert warns when work is waiting and no harness is available.
- Plow. Turns the soil of a growing zone and raises its fertility by 30% for one season. Never used on frozen ground, and each growing zone has its own toggle. Larger animals plow faster.
- Draft cart. Carries several stacks in a single trip, up to 300 kg or as much as the animal can take without being overloaded, and adds 100 kg of carrying capacity in caravans.
- Snow scraper. Clears the snow-clearing area without a colonist shovelling. A colonist swaps the plow for it when the ground freezes, and swaps back once the snow is gone.
- An animal carries one implement at a time, and the tack rack stores the lot at three items per cell without deterioration.

Leave at least three cells between a growing zone and any fence: hard against a fence, or enclosed inside an animal pen, the zone can leave the colonist leading the animal going back and forth through the gate.

Requires Harmony. Each Animals at Work module works on its own. English and French are both included. Animal mod authors: see the end of this description.

Chaque module Animals at Work fonctionne seul.

If your species is a pack animal, it already works and there is nothing to do. Otherwise mark it once and your players never have to touch the settings. Drop this in your Patches folder; MayRequire makes the whole operation vanish when this mod is absent, so it is safe to ship unconditionally:

<Operation Class="PatchOperationAddModExtension" MayRequire="royaltea.animalsatwork.plowing">
<xpath>Defs/ThingDef</xpath>
<value><li Class="AnimalsAtWork.Plowing.ModExtension_BeteDeTrait" /></value>
</Operation>

No training and no research gating on your side: a marked species can be harnessed as soon as the player has researched the equipment. Players can still untick it in the settings if they would rather not harness it.
