You're both orphans. Your parents? Long dead, torn apart by viscious machines out for blood. You both harbour a special kind of hate for the mechanoids, never to forgive them. The people you thought cared cast you aside like trash, ridiculous laws demanding you two to fend for yourselves. It's on the streets where you rescue a sick, orphaned kitten; you feel its pain, its loss, so you take it in.

You're sent to a foreign planet, one you know no one returns from, without even clothes to cover yourselves. A punishment, they said. You were cursed, they said. You'll show them; you will survive.
