Giddy-Up: Cavalry Charge
This mod expands Giddy-Up's mounted combat by allowing multiple riders to be organized into a single cavalry formation and launch a coordinated charge into enemy lines.
Rally your cavalry, arrange them into formation, and designate a charge route.
Depending on the mounts' speed and size, as well as the riders' combat skills, they can knock enemies aside and deal devastating impact damage.
How to Use
• Assign a commander and cavalry members in the cavalry management window.
• Select the formation you wish to use.
• Select the commander and issue the Rally command.
• Wait until every member has gathered and mounted.
• Designate the starting point and route of the charge.
• Break through the enemy line.
Main Features
- Organize multiple mounted pawns into a single cavalry unit
- Assign a cavalry commander and formation members
- Automatically mount and arrange the cavalry through the Rally command
- Draw a charge route with the mouse
- Route correction and smooth formation movement
Rallying and Charging
Select the cavalry commander and issue the Rally command.
The other members will gather around the commander and automatically mount their assigned animals.
Once the rally is complete, you can designate the starting point and movement route of the charge.
Each cavalry member will move into their assigned formation position before charging together with the commander.
Canceling a formation charge immediately stops members who are still moving into position or waiting to begin.
Cavalry members who have already begun charging will instead slow down according to their remaining momentum.
Melee and Animals Skills
Charging consumes a resource called Stamina.
Maximum Stamina increases according to the rider's Melee and Animals skills.
Charge damage consists of three separate components:
- Collision damage
- Mount attack
- Rider weapon attack
Collision damage scales with both Melee and Animals skills.
Mount attack damage scales with Animals skill, while rider weapon damage scales with Melee skill.
For this reason, Animals skill is just as important as Melee skill when training an effective cavalry force.
Formation Types
Standard Formation
A balanced formation that makes use of both speed and size.
It is suitable for cavalry units composed of a wide variety of mounts.
Line Formation
Cavalry members spread across a wide front and collide with multiple enemies at once.
This formation is particularly effective when using large and heavy mounts.
Wedge Formation
A long, narrow triangular formation designed to penetrate enemy lines.
Faster mounts can inflict especially powerful collision damage in this formation.
Charge Damage
Charge damage is not a fixed value. It is calculated using the following factors:
- The mount's Move Speed*
- The mount's Body Size
- The target's Body Size and collision resistance
- The rider's Melee and Animals skills
- The selected cavalry formation
Fast mounts perform especially well in Wedge Formation,
while enormous mounts are most effective in Line Formation.
A successful collision can trigger more than just direct collision damage:
- A suitable mount attack, such as a horn, tusk, head, or beak strike
- An attack using the rider's equipped melee weapon
These additional attacks are not guaranteed to hit.
They use their original hit calculations and armor penetration values.
Impact and Recoil
Each collision reduces the cavalry member's speed according to the size difference between the cavalry and the target.
Colliding with a wall or an impassable structure can inflict severe damage on the cavalry member.
Smaller targets are knocked farther away and stunned for longer.
When the target is at least three times larger than the cavalry member, the collision is treated as though the cavalry had struck a wall. Charge with caution.
Mount Compatibility
This mod does not restrict cavalry mounts solely according to whether they are classified as animals.
Any pawn that Giddy-Up recognizes as a valid mount can be assigned to a cavalry unit, including:
- Vanilla animals
- Modded animals
- Rideable mechanoids
- Rideable entities
- Other Giddy-Up-compatible mounts
Each mount uses its actual Body Size and Move Speed.
Animal and creature mods can therefore provide a much wider variety of cavalry options.
Move Speed Calculation
Normal mounted movement still benefits from Giddy-Up's handling and riding bonuses.
However, Move Speed bonuses added specifically by Giddy-Up's riding and training systems are excluded when calculating cavalry charge speed and charge damage.
This prevents normally slow mounts from gaining excessive collision damage through unusually large riding bonuses.
Injuries, Hediffs, racial traits, and Move Speed changes applied by other mods are still taken into account normally.
Special Compatibility Features
Ratkin – Hamstrocks
Hamstrocks affected by the Ratkin morale-boosting rider effect deal increased direct collision damage while charging.
Ratkin Heavy Lance
A rider equipped with a Ratkin lance receives an additional damage bonus to their weapon attack during a charge.
Notes
- Cavalry members must be able to mount and move normally.
- Being downed, suffering a mental break, being incapable of combat, or having severely reduced mobility can prevent a charge.
- Formations may fail to assemble correctly in areas with too many obstacles or blocked paths.
- Very large mounts may require wider formation spacing when used in narrow passages.
