No Doctor Needed

Ever played a solo colonist and realized that the shiny new bionic leg in your inventory is completely useless because... you need someone else to install it? No Doctor Needed lets colonists perform surgery on themselves. Schedule the operation, prepare everything you need, find a suitable place to lie down and hope your medical skills are as good as you think they are.

How does it work?

Self-surgery is handled as a proper process rather than just pressing a button and rolling the dice. Once an operation is scheduled, a colonist capable of performing it can prepare for self-surgery. They'll gather the required medicine, implants and other ingredients, move to a suitable bed and wait for you to begin. Before committing to the operation, you'll be able to see the conditions they're working with and their expected chance of success. Medical skill matters, but so does everything else you'd expect when trying to cut yourself open without passing out: • Medical skill • Consciousness • Manipulation • Current pain and pain tolerance • Medicine quality • Surgical environment • Existing post-surgical shock Even under excellent conditions, operating on yourself is risky.

Surviving the surgery is only half the problem

Finishing an operation leaves the colonist with Post-Surgical Shock. Depending on how the surgery went, they may temporarily suffer reduced consciousness, manipulation and movement, along with changes to how strongly they feel pain. The shock gradually wears off as they recover. You can perform another surgery before recovering. Whether that's a good idea is a different question. Repeated operations accumulate shock and make further self-surgery increasingly difficult, so replacing half your body in one afternoon might have consequences.

Made for solo and nomadic runs

No Doctor Needed was originally made with solo colonies in mind: situations where another doctor simply isn't available. A colonist can use medicine, implants and other surgical ingredients carried in their own inventory. You don't need to drop your bionic parts on the floor just so RimWorld acknowledges that you have them. This makes the mod particularly useful for nomadic playstyles and was designed with Perspective Shift and Pick Up And Haul in mind. Neither is required. No Doctor Needed works on its own.

It still plays by RimWorld's rules

No Doctor Needed doesn't replace RimWorld's surgery system. It handles the additional difficulty and consequences of operating on yourself, then lets the normal surgery system determine what actually happens.

Make it as forgiving (or horrible) as you want

Most of the important balance values can be adjusted in the mod settings. You can change things such as the maximum success chance, how much different factors contribute, how severe post-surgical shock is, how long recovery takes and how repeated surgeries accumulate shock. The default settings are the balance the mod was designed around, but you're free to make self-surgery safer, harsher, or disable parts of the system entirely.

Compatibility

Harmony. (needed) Designed with Perspective Shift and Pick Up And Haul in mind, but neither is required. Because No Doctor Needed leaves the actual surgery outcome to RimWorld's normal system, it is intended to remain compatible with mods that add or modify surgeries and their outcomes. If you find an incompatibility or something behaves strangely, let me know.

No doctor? No problem.

Want to support me?

If you enjoyed No Doctor Needed and want to support the stuff I make, you can buy me a coffee on Ko-fi. It's completely optional, but greatly appreciated!
