RimTalk Lucid Chronicle

Give your colonists memories, your colony a Chronicle — and conversation a stage to happen on. RimTalk Lucid Chronicle is a RimTalk extension that gives colonists a memory system as simply as possible, then lets an AI storyteller weave a colony Chronicle from those memories. Drawing on their persona, colonists condense each day's events into layered, first-person memories and continually update a single long-term memory. This keeps memories from evaporating while they gradually change and grow. The mod also adds Conversation Mode for talking while game time is paused, "peek at inner thoughts", player-written Common Knowledge, and a Diary that expands a day's memory into a personal entry. The LLM normally follows your RimTalk settings, but a separate model can be used for memory summarization. This mod was inspired by RimTalk Expand Memory and rebuilt from scratch to be simpler and more multilingual-friendly. The goal: install RimTalk, set each colonist's persona, press a preset button suited to your LLM speed or API budget, and it works well enough from there. If you want advanced customization, please use Expand Memory instead. Please note
  • Because it stores memory differently, this mod cannot be used together with RimTalk Expand Memory. For compatibility with other RimTalk sub-mods, see the compatibility thread.
  • Adding Lucid Chronicle mid-save, or switching over from another memory mod? See the switching guide.
  • This mod is still being updated frequently. If something seems off, please check the change notes first.
  • This mod replaces RimTalk's Chat History feature. With default settings it disables RimTalk-side Chat History automatically, but if you use a customized entry, please disable it yourself.
  • If your local LLM is slow, raise the summarization timeout.
  • Default prompts are Japanese in Japanese environments and English otherwise, but summary outputs are pinned to the active game language.
  • This was made mainly for my own enjoyment, so it still has rough edges. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

■ Conversation features

To enrich memories and add detail to the chronicle, the mod offers several ways to draw out what your colonists say and think.
  • Spontaneous conversation: a right-click menu that starts an AI-driven conversation. Let them decide for themselves what's worth saying.
  • Conversation Mode: keep a conversation going while game time is paused. Open it from the bottom-right toggle, then add colonists by right-clicking or selecting several and using "Add selected". No more drafting them just to stop them wandering off mid-scene.
  • Peek at inner thoughts: a right-click menu that reveals a colonist's true inner voice without leaving it in anyone else's memory. Find out what your tsundere really felt, or whether they like someone or simply can't stand them. It is referenced only by that colonist's next lines.

■ Memory algorithm & UI

Memory layers
  1. Day log (raw data) Accumulates the raw log of conversations and events, tagging each with addressee, speaker status, location, and timing.
  2. Short-term memory (today so far) Once enough day-log lines accumulate, they are condensed into a first-person short-term memory.
  3. Mid-term memory (daily summary) At day's end, the short-term memory plus any unprocessed day-log lines are condensed into a single mid-term entry.
  4. Long-term memory (the backbone) When mid-term memories exceed their cap, the older half is integrated with the current long-term memory and rewritten into one "memory backbone".
  5. Pinned memory Any memory you consider important can be pinned so it's never forgotten.
  6. Common knowledge Colony knowledge, known only to colony members, and World knowledge, known to everyone including visitors and enemies. Each field can be injected into conversation prompts and/or into the memory/chronicle summaries.
Persona supplement At set intervals, the mod compares RimTalk's persona with the colonist's long-term memory and extracts how their values and behavior have shifted. Like the "Results" (long-term memory) and "Discussion" (supplement = behavioral criteria) of a paper, the two are used together to guide the colonist. Memory viewer & chronicle
  • A per-colonist memory viewer: browse each layer, write a detailed diary from a mid-term memory, and edit / pin / delete entries.
  • Diary: expand a day's memory into a detailed first-person entry. Nothing in the Diary tab is injected into conversation. Even without generated prose, mid-term memories move into the Diary instead of disappearing when integrated into long-term memory.
  • Chronicle: an AI storyteller automatically generates daily and 10-day chronicles.
  • Copy / export: information can be copied for all colonists at once and given to an external LLM to continue the colony's conversations outside the game.

■ Conversation & event memory

Addressee inference algorithm Reduces the problem where several characters all assume a line was addressed to them. It is not perfect, but it helps.
  1. Player directive: self-explanatory, and always the highest priority.
  2. Explicit target: the addressee output by the AI. Not very common.
  3. Vocative name at the start of the line: detects a name + vocative boundary near the beginning, such as "Taro, ...".
  4. Reply chain: a line fired in reply to an earlier one takes that earlier speaker as its addressee.
  5. Recent-speaker list (proximity first): selects the closest recent speaker within the time, map, and distance limits, reducing mix-ups with 3+ characters.
  6. RimTalk's pair: if still unresolved, the partner RimTalk chose is used as the addressee.
  7. Non-specific marker: as a last resort, the line is marked "(to those present)" — phrased to fit anyone, so bystanders don't each assume it was meant for them and all run off replying.
Other memory
  • Status tags: a speaker's or actor's standing (temporary visitor, prisoner, hostile) is taken from game data, reducing cases where a fallen raider is mistaken for a friend.
  • Event records: RimWorld letters are remembered with their contents, classified by LetterDef rather than language.
  • Battle records: only downs and deaths are remembered, with status tags, so colonists recognize when an enemy has fallen.
  • Social logs from specific mods: ingested by specifying a package ID. For example, with Rim*ob*orld installed, entering its ID lets colonists react to those events in conversation.

If Lucid Chronicle made your colony a bit more alive, buying me a coffee grants me a +10 "Drank fine coffee" mood buff ;) https://ko-fi.com/lucid_alus
