Split Attraction
Split Attraction separates sexual orientation and romantic orientation into two independent systems.
Split Attraction separates sexual orientation and romantic orientation into two independent systems.
In vanilla RimWorld, attraction and romance are largely tied together through a small set of orientation traits. This mod expands that system so pawns can have different sexual and romantic orientations, including split-attraction combinations.
FEATURES
• Independent sexual and romantic orientation systems
• Straight, Heteroflexible, Bisexual, Homoflexible, Gay, Pansexual, and Asexual orientations
• Heteroromantic, Homoromantic, Biromantic, Panromantic, and Aromantic orientations
• Demisexual and Demiromantic modifiers
• Flexible orientations can experience reduced secondary-gender sexual attraction instead of being treated as strictly binary
• Sexual orientation affects Lovin' behavior
• Romantic orientation affects romance attempts, acceptance, and romantic relationships
• Compatible adult single pawns can engage in casual Lovin' without becoming romantic partners
• Casual Lovin' is influenced by sexual orientation, mutual opinion, personal attraction, and ideology
• Asexual pawns do not participate in sexual interactions governed by the mod
• Demisexual and Demiromantic pawns require sufficiently strong mutual opinion before the relevant interactions become available
• Ideology Physical Love rules are respected when the Ideology expansion is active
• Orientation data persists through saving and loading
• Starting pawns receive Split Attraction orientations before the colony begins
• Existing romance and relationship mechanics are preserved wherever possible
• Compatible with direct trait editing through pawn editing tools
SPLIT ATTRACTION
Sexual and romantic attraction do not have to match.
For example, a pawn may be:
• Straight + Homoromantic
• Gay + Heteroromantic
• Asexual + Biromantic
• Bisexual + Aromantic
These combinations behave according to each orientation independently.
A pawn's romantic orientation determines who they can pursue or accept romantically, while sexual orientation independently determines sexual attraction and Lovin' compatibility.
CASUAL LOVIN'
Compatible adult single pawns can occasionally engage in Lovin' without being lovers, fiancés, or spouses.
Casual Lovin' does not automatically create a romantic relationship.
It is not based on sexual orientation alone. Both pawns must satisfy several conditions, including:
• Compatible sexual attraction
• Sufficient mutual opinion
• Sufficient personal attraction
• Any Demisexual requirements
• Compatible Ideology rules, when applicable
Pawns who strongly dislike each other or experience insufficient personal attraction will not participate simply because their sexual orientations are compatible.
Casual Lovin' is currently limited to adult, free, single colonists. Pawns who already have a romantic partner use RimWorld's normal relationship and Lovin' systems instead.
DEMISEXUAL / DEMIROMANTIC
Demisexual and Demiromantic are treated as modifiers rather than standalone base orientations.
By default, the relationship requirement is based on mutual opinion.
Demisexual pawns require sufficiently strong mutual opinion before sexual attraction and relevant Lovin' behavior become available.
Demiromantic pawns require sufficiently strong mutual opinion before romantic interactions become available.
FLEXIBLE ORIENTATIONS
Heteroflexible and Homoflexible pawns retain a primary direction of attraction while allowing a reduced level of sexual attraction toward the secondary gender.
This affects attraction strength and frequency rather than acting as a simple on/off restriction.
As a result, secondary-direction sexual interactions are possible but significantly less likely than interactions matching the pawn's primary orientation.
IDEOLOGY
When the Ideology expansion is active, Split Attraction respects a pawn's Physical Love precepts.
Ideologies that restrict physical relationships to spouses or otherwise prohibit non-romantic physical relationships will prevent casual Lovin'.
Ideologies that allow free physical relationships can permit casual Lovin' when the other attraction and relationship requirements are also met.
Both pawns must individually permit the interaction.
PAWN GENERATION
New pawns receive orientations automatically.
Starting colonists are assigned Split Attraction orientations during pawn generation, allowing their orientations to appear correctly before the colony begins.
The default distribution is weighted heavily toward straight and heteroromantic pawns, while less common orientations and split-attraction combinations appear at lower frequencies.
Straight and default heteroromantic orientations may remain visually hidden where appropriate, while their orientation data is still stored internally.

COMPATIBILITY
The mod uses Harmony patches to modify romance, attraction, pawn generation, and Lovin' calculations.
Mods that completely replace RimWorld's romance, attraction, Lovin', relationship, or related pawn-generation systems may conflict with Split Attraction.
Pawn editors that modify traits directly should generally work with the mod's orientation synchronization system.
Existing saves are supported, but backing up saves before adding, removing, or updating gameplay mods is always recommended.
KNOWN LIMITATIONS
RimWorld's relationship and Lovin' systems contain several interconnected vanilla checks. Unusual interactions may still occur when Split Attraction is used alongside heavily modified romance, relationship, ideology, or Lovin' systems.
Casual Lovin' currently focuses on adult single colonists and does not attempt to replace broader relationship systems such as affairs or fully custom relationship structures.
Bug reports with clear reproduction steps are appreciated.
