Planetsmith

Planetsmith rebuilds world generation around a climate simulation.

Planetsmith rebuilds world generation around a climate simulation. Instead of picking biomes from temperature and rainfall thresholds, it works out where the wind blows, where the rain falls and where the water goes, then lets biomes settle where they actually belong.

Deserts end up in rain shadows. Forests follow the moisture. A monsoon coast sits green beside a parched interior at the same latitude.

Everything else generates as normal: rivers, roads, factions, landmarks and quests are untouched.

The simulation:

  • Temperature falling from equator to pole, and with altitude
  • Rainfall in the three great latitude belts
  • Rain shadows behind mountains
  • Moisture carried inland by the wind, drying out continental interiors
  • Ocean currents tempering the coasts, which is how a desert ends up on a shoreline
  • Seasons that deepen inland and toward the poles, set by axial tilt
  • Monsoons breaking over tropical coasts
  • Effective moisture, weighing rainfall against how much of it would evaporate
  • Drainage gathering whole watersheds into the valleys
  • Lakes filling the hollows that rivers run into but never out of
  • Wetlands where water collects, in dips and along floodplains

What you can change, per planet:

  • Sea level and how much of the surface is land
  • Axial tilt, from a world with no seasons to one with brutal ones
  • Eight dials over the simulation itself: temperature, rainfall, rain shadows, inland moisture, monsoons, seasons and coasts
  • Any biome: turn it off, change how much ground it takes, or nudge its score
  • Presets, to save all of the above and reuse it on every planet afterwards
  • Nine map modes, to see the climate behind a world before you land on it
