Reasonable Moods & Capable Backstories mod preview for RimWorld

Reasonable Moods & Capable Backstories The rim is a chaotic, post-apocalyptic place.

Reasonable Moods & Capable Backstories

The rim is a chaotic, post-apocalyptic place. People who survive it are adaptable — yet vanilla is full of pawns who are permanently incapable of hauling because they were once a chef, mood crashes over an ugly floor, and colonists who shrug when you sell their wife to pirates but never forgive a cheater. This mod makes backstories, moods, and relationships make sense.

Capable Backstories

Every vanilla and DLC backstory with a work disable was reviewed by hand, with one rule: a disable stays only when the story truly earns it.
  • Kept: genuine trauma and conviction. The pyromaniac still can't fight fires. The broken soldier with PTSD still can't fight. The chaplain keeps his vow. The trauma-mute child stays withdrawn.
  • Removed: nonsense. The medieval lord who "considers labor beneath him" CAN dig — he's just bad at it. The blacksmith is no longer incapable of all intellectual work. The chef can clean his own kitchen. The "cold and calculating" assassin is no longer incapable of intellectual work.
  • Traded: where a disable was removed, a fitting skill penalty often takes its place. Pampered nobles, models and desk-workers become capable but clumsy — realistic, not free.

Reasonable Moods

A full pass over mood and opinion outliers, in both directions:
  • Selling someone's loved one: -10 → -60 opinion. Cheating on them: -70 → -50. Betrayal now scales with the betrayal.
  • Divorce and breakups hurt — but no longer more than someone killing your lover.
  • Killing a pawn's kin or bonded animal is finally taken seriously.
  • An ugly floor, a small bedroom, a bland stretch without horseshoes, kibble, or a dead man's shirt are inconveniences, not catastrophes.
  • Genuine horrors (like a colonist being harvested for organs) are no longer shrugged off.
  • Starvation, pain, temperature and other physiological suffering are untouched.

Grief That Tapers Instead of Vanishing

Vanilla grief is a flat debuff for 30 days, then it falls off a cliff. Now losing a spouse, child, or friend hits harder on day one (about 1.5× vanilla) and fades gradually to nothing over 40 days. Total grief is comparable — the shape is human. Also smooths out mood whiplash after mass-casualty events.

Shared Hardship Builds Bonds

Trench camaraderie. Colonists who actively fight through a raid, battle a large fire, or endure a disease outbreak together gain a mutual opinion boost with each other. The colonist who hid in bed gains nothing. Tightly-tested colonies form real bonds.

Betrayal Has Witnesses

Reputation is social. When someone cheats on a colonist or sells their loved one, every colonist hears about it and loses some opinion of the offender — not just the victim. Psychopaths, naturally, don't care.

Realistic Life Stories

No more tribal children growing up into void-space raiders, or organ-farm urchins ascending to high royalty. Implausible childhood → adulthood pairings are re-rolled during pawn generation, making them rare, not impossible — it's still a chaotic universe. A glitterworld child crash-landing into a tribal adulthood stays perfectly possible (that's just falling down the tech ladder).

Traits That Fit the Story

The same idea, applied to traits. A hardened urbworld enforcer leans tough and brave; a pampered noble leans soft and cowardly; a scholar leans smart, a laborer industrious. Thematic backstories pull thematic traits — an ice-world childhood is far more likely to be cold-tolerant, a cave dweller an undergrounder. Mismatches still happen (it's the rim), just rarely. Reads the traits from Vanilla Traits Expanded and Combat Extended too, if you have them.

Romance That Knows When to Quit

Pawns who keep getting rejected stop chasing for a while instead of endlessly throwing themselves at someone who isn't interested. And after a failed romance, the two don't just go back to cheerful small talk — their chitchat becomes Awkward Chat, a stilted, slightly uncomfortable exchange that lingers until they both get over it. Then things return to normal.

Grace Period for Recreation & Comfort

Crash survivors scraping a camp together don't expect a game of horseshoes. For the first 5 days, recreation and comfort decay at 25% speed, then ease back to normal by day 20 — by the time your colony is really built, expectations are back to vanilla. Adding the mod to an established save changes nothing.

Built-in Compatibility

The same hand-review was applied to these backstory mods (patches only load if you have them):
  • Cybranian - Backstories+
  • Vanilla Backstories Expanded
  • Tribal Backstories
  • Seal's Backstory Collection
  • Rimworld Apocalyptic Backstories (verified compatible as-is — no changes needed)
Also verified compatible with:
  • Psychology — its personality and conversation systems layer on top of this mod's rebalanced values. Load this mod after Psychology.
  • All Memories Fade — its global sliders multiply this mod's values; the grief taper shapes them over time. They compose naturally.
  • Less Stupid Romance Attempt — it fixes who gets asked out and halts attempts after a rejection, so this mod's own romance cooldown automatically steps aside when LSRA is loaded. The awkward-chat and rejection-mood changes still apply.
  • Combat Extended — CE lets pacifist-flavored pawns still shoot in self-defense. This mod fixes the vanilla source disables underneath, so a "reptile researcher" is no longer flagged incapable at all. Its traits are also used when fitting traits to backstories.
  • Vanilla Traits Expanded — its extra traits (brave, coward, workaholic, cold/heat inclined, and more) are folded into the trait-fitting system, so they land on the pawns they suit.
  • Rimpsyche (Core, Disposition, Sexuality) — verified compatible. Rimpsyche's personality system multiplies this mod's rebalanced mood values (they compose, not conflict), its smalltalk respects the awkward-chat suppression, its romance overhaul keeps the vanilla rejection memories this mod's cooldown reads, and its needs tweaks stack cleanly with the grace period.
  • RimRelations — verified compatible. Its relationship progression reads opinion normally, so hardship bonds, betrayal reputation, and awkward chats all feed into it naturally.
Note: the review covers the named/notable "solid" backstories too (the ones attached to characters like a specific colonist you recruit), not just the random shuffled ones.

Mod Settings

Every feature is a separate toggle in Options → Mod Settings, all on by default. Turn off exactly the parts you don't want:
  • Capable backstories, mood rebalance, and grief taper (these three need a game restart to take effect).
  • Needs grace period, hardship bonding, betrayal witnesses, backstory pairing, trait fitting, romance cooldown, and awkward chat all toggle live, mid-save.

Compatibility & Details

• Requires Harmony. • Supports RimWorld 1.6 and all DLCs (Royalty content is patched only when present). • Safe to add to an existing save. Removing mid-save is mostly fine — backstory and mood value changes sim
