Best on a New Colony - Existing Saves Supported in Compatibility Mode

A world generated with the mod installed gets everything. A world already in progress is adopted in Compatibility Mode.

Regions and Territories does most of its work during world generation. It draws the province boundaries and then places faction settlements according to them, respecting region occupancy limits, border buffers, and sequential expansion.

Added to a world that already exists, it adopts that world in Compatibility Mode. Provinces are still drawn, territory is still owned and shown on the map modes, and the overlays work as normal. What stands down is placement: the mod will not decide where settlements and outposts may be built, because your world is already full of towns placed with no regard for those rules, and enforcing them now would refuse ground that has been settled since long before the mod arrived. Vanilla and any other mods keep control of placement, and more than one settlement may share a province.

The mode is decided once per save and recorded in it. You can see and change it under Strict territorial ownership in the mod settings while that save is loaded - though switching an in-progress world to strict starts applying rules to settlements that were never placed under them.

A new colony is still the recommended way to play. Compatibility mode exists so an existing save is usable, not so it is equivalent - geography-driven faction placement, region occupancy limits, border buffers and sequential expansion are the heart of what this mod does, and only a world generated with the mod installed gets them.

Removing it from an in-progress save will log errors about missing province data when that save is next loaded. The save will usually still open, but this is not a supported path and you should expect a wall of red text.

Regions and Territories divides the globe into dynamic geographic provinces with defined borders, population densities, custom road linkages, and procedurally placed ruins.

Key Features

  • Geographic Domain Mapping: Splits the world map into dynamic provinces with clear geographic boundaries.
  • Faction Territory Overlays: Displays visual, expandable territory control maps using the Map Mode Framework.
  • Procedural Trade Infrastructure: Dynamically links generated settlements with trade roads and places historical ruins on the world map.

Roadmap

  • 0.8 - Demographics, News and Narrative Voice: Regional ideological demographics - a per-region belief-distribution model, pawns generated from it, a migrating dwelling heatmap, Empire hiring cost and resource overlays tied to regional population, plus world-gen options (land coverage and multiple continents) and livable ruins.
  • 0.9 - Factions and Living Societies: Deeper placement and territory governance feeding the Factions layer.
  • 0.10 - Cross-Mod Capability Passes: Another pass over how territory drives the whole set.
These ship when they are ready - no dates.

Changelog (v0.7.4) - Border overlay ownership fix

  • Fixed: the global region-border overlay again shows faction ownership at a glance, so you no longer have to switch into the Territories map mode to read who holds what. It had stopped colouring borders after the 0.7.3 ownership rework - the overlay never recalculated owners and never repainted when they changed, so every border drew white.
  • Improved: borders now read claim strength directly. A region held outright (over 50%) draws a solid line in its owner's colour; a contested region alternates the two claimants' colours; a loosely-held region (a single 30-50% claim) alternates the claimant's colour with white.

Compatibility Matrix

  • Royalty DLC: Compatible
  • Ideology DLC: Compatible
  • Biotech DLC: Compatible
  • Anomaly DLC: Compatible
  • Odyssey DLC: Fully Compatible and Optimized. Space factions are generated on the Orbit layer naturally, and terrestrial factions generate on the Surface layer.
  • Map Mode Framework: Required for the map mode overlays.
  • Existing saves: Supported in Compatibility Mode - provinces are generated and territory is drawn, but placement rules stand down and stay with vanilla or whichever mod owns them. A new colony still gets the full experience, including R&T-governed faction placement.

Requirements

  • Map Mode Framework
  • Harmony
