Zoology + Animals Are Fun Compatibility mod preview for RimWorld

In short: what does this patch do?

In short: what does this patch do?

An unofficial compatibility bridge for Zoology: Realistic Animal Overhaul and Animals are fun! (Continued). Both mods add pet walks and fetch. This patch lets Animals are fun! handle those activities without disabling the rest of Zoology's mechanics.

What exactly changes?

  • Pet walks and fetch are handled by Animals are fun!. Its jobs and animal-selection settings are used: size, wildness, cuteness, bonding, distance, exotic and humanlike animals, non-colonists, other factions, and the other available options.
  • Zoology's duplicate activities Zoology_WantToWalkCanine and Zoology_WantToPlayFetchCanine are removed while both required mods are active. Colonists no longer receive a second, canine-only version of the same activities.
  • Zoology's Play With Pet remains. The colonist interacts with the pet and repeatedly sends it chasing an imaginary toy across nearby cells. Unlike fetch, the animal does not bring anything back. The activity works indoors and does not require an outdoor area.
  • Because walks and fetch are now handled by AAF, Zoology's chance to form a new bond during these activities would otherwise be lost. The patch preserves it: whenever a walk or fetch activity successfully begins, one bond attempt is made with a base chance of 0.7%. Normal RimWorld and Zoology restrictions still apply.
  • Everything else in Zoology remains unchanged. The bridge only affects the two duplicate activities and adds a single bond attempt when a walk or fetch begins.
About bonding: AAF's bonded-animal preference looks for an existing bond; Zoology's roll can create a new one. A bond is only required when AAF is configured to allow bonded animals only. Walks, fetch, and eligible animals are configured through AAF; Play With Pet and bonding mechanics remain controlled by Zoology. The patch has no settings of its own.

Load order

The bridge must load after Zoology and AAF; loadAfter is already defined. The order between Zoology and AAF does not matter. Walk Around Park is optional.

Walk Around Park

With Walk Around Park installed, AAF pet walks and fetch can take place in a suitable operational park. Play With Pet remains near the animal. Walk Around Park supports Zoology and Animals are fun! separately; this bridge is only needed when both mods are installed together.

Important warning

Zoology lists AAF in incompatibleWith. RimWorld reads this data before compatibility patches are loaded, so the incompatibility warning will remain. The bridge resolves the current gameplay overlap but cannot remove metadata from another mod. Compatibility may need to be reviewed again after updates to Zoology or Animals are fun!. When disabling one of the mods: disable this patch as well, follow the corresponding mod author's instructions, and make a backup of your save beforehand. This patch does not automatically make removing mods from an existing save safe.
