At Your Service The maid does the work.

At Your Service

The maid does the work. The butler runs the house. So I made a butler mod. Not a cleaner, not a servant — a butler. The guy who brings you dinner without being asked, wakes you up at 7, keeps a running inventory of what the colony's short on, and quietly loses it if the dining room is filthy. He starts as a Footman and works his way up to Head Butler over a couple of in-game years, and by the end he's improving your trade prices just by standing there looking composed. It adds zero items and zero buildings. It's all systems and UI built on top of stuff you already have, so it plays nice with basically everything.

Ranks

Your butler earns ServiceXP for everything he does. No research, no crafting — he just gets better at the job by doing it.
  • Footman — starting rank. Meals, refreshments, polishing, rounding people up.
  • Under-Butler (5,000 XP) — unlocks valet duties. He'll dress your patron in a planned outfit.
  • Butler (15,000 XP) — unlocks supervision. Anyone cleaning or hauling near him works 15% faster.
  • Head Butler (40,000 XP) — the top. Discreet Mode, concealed carry, the Household Ledger, and a permanent buff to your trade prices.
You get letters for the big promotions explaining what just unlocked. He also keeps a lifetime record of every single thing he's done, with milestone letters at 100 / 500 / 1,000 / 2,500 acts of service. Weirdly satisfying to check on an old butler and see 900 meals served.

What he actually does

Order any of this directly, or set it to run automatically on his daily routine. Food and drink
  • Serve a meal — grabs the best meal in your stockpile and hands it to whoever needs it. Finds modded meals fine, and respects food restrictions and ideology so nobody gets served something they'll hate.
  • Serve refreshments — tea, beer, coffee, whatever's in the cellar.
  • Tea round — this one's my favourite. Everyone gets called to a table, sits down, and gets served in turn. Serves your patron first. Nicer room = better mood bonus.
  • Nightcap — a drink before bed. Toggle whether he's allowed to use booze.
  • Announce dinner — same as the tea round but with actual food. One click feeds the colony.
Personal stuff
  • Call to my side — he comes and stands with you.
  • Bring me something — click any item on the map and he fetches it to you. Medicine, a gun, a beer, whatever. Genuinely the thing I use most.
  • Get dressed — the valet puts your planned outfit on you.
  • Morning call — wakes your patron at a set hour. Getting woken up by your butler instead of an alarm is worth a mood buff.
  • Gather everyone — pulls the whole colony to one spot.
Running the place
  • Inspect the estate — he walks every room and writes you an actual report: impressiveness and filth per room, click to jump there, plus a verdict from him. ("Standards have slipped considerably. I shall see to it.")
  • Polish the silver — cleans up your silver and artwork.
  • Household Ledger (Head Butler only) — set target amounts for stuff you always want in stock, see what you've actually got, get a shopping list of what's missing.
Guests
  • Under-Butler and up will greet visitors who wander into your home area — traders, envoys, randoms — and you get a bit of faction goodwill out of it. Configurable, won't happen during a raid.

Composure

He's got a composure meter. It goes up when he's wearing a decent coat, the place is clean, and his patron is happy. It goes down when everything's filthy and everyone's miserable. Let it bottom out and you get "Standards Have Slipped" — he walks off the job, pours himself an enormous drink, and drinks it. Fully optional, and there's a slider if you want it gentler or harsher.

Protocol Silverside

A Head Butler can hide a gun on himself and flip on Discreet Mode. When something hostile shows up in your home area he pulls it out instantly and gets a short buff to speed, accuracy and pain tolerance while he handles it. At the same time anyone with a combat outfit planned gets hustled into their armour. It's very silly and I love it.

Relationships

Assigning a butler to a patron makes a real relationship that shows up in the Social tab — he lists them as his patron, they list him as their butler, both get an opinion boost. It moves properly if you reassign him, goes away if you dismiss him, and if his patron dies he takes it badly.

The UI

Everything's done through gizmos. No main tab cluttering up your bottom bar.
  • Appoint butler opens a hiring screen that ranks your colonists by how suited they are — social skill and passion, temperament, that kind of thing — and tells you straight up if someone's a bad fit. It also warns you what you're giving up ("presently your masonry 14 and crafting 11") and lets you pick their patron right there.
  • Ring for service on any colonist opens a menu showing who's answering, what he's doing right now, how far away he is, and everything you can ask for. Multiple butlers? Pick which one. Shift-click to queue up a few things at once.
  • Butler services and Butler management on the butler himself — all his orders, his routine, the wardrobe planner, and his service record.
If something's unavailable it greys out and tells you why instead of just not working. "No ensemble has been planned", "he has not yet the rank for valet duties", that sort of thing.

Compatibility

  • 1.5 and 1.6.
  • Needs Harmony.
  • Adds no items, apparel or buildings. Literally zero ThingDefs. The only assets in the whole mod are the gizmo icons.
  • Food, drink and furniture mods just work. Meals are found by food type, drinks by their fluid/joy properties, tables by their eating surface. So modded food and dining furniture get picked up automatically, no patches needed.
  • Built to sit alongside maid/servant mods. The supervision buff speeds up any colonist cleaning or hauling nearby, including maids from my maid mod, with no hard dependency or reflection. I deliberately left bedroom-tidying and message-carrying out because my maid mod already does those.
  • Safe to add mid-save.

Settings

Three presets — Relaxed / Balanced / Demanding — if you just want to set a vibe and move on. Under that you can tweak XP rate, butler limit, whether he serves everyone or just his patron, composure and how harsh it is, booze in nightcaps, supervision, how long dressing takes, combat swapping, discretion, guest reception and goodwill, and the estate standard. Every slider tells you what the number actually does, because I hate sliders that don't.

Removing it

It stores data in a game component and adds relations to pawns, so pulling it out mid-save will throw the usual red errors on first load. Dismiss your butlers first if you want a clean exit.
