SKYFALL – ATMOSPHERIC COLLAPSE

"The colder the world becomes, the less sky remains."

What happens when a RimWorld becomes too cold for its own atmosphere?

At roughly Earth-like pressure, oxygen condenses around -183 °C and nitrogen around -196 °C. Cool a planet far enough and parts of its atmosphere can no longer remain gaseous. The pressure falls. Eventually, there is not enough atmosphere left to breathe. Skyfall turns that idea into a RimWorld disaster. The real physics are considerably more complicated, so Skyfall uses a gameplay abstraction rather than attempting a full atmospheric simulation.

Atmospheric Collapse

Skyfall monitors the actual outdoor temperature of your colonies.
  • Atmosphere is permanently lost in 10% stages.
  • Each stage requires 6 continuous in-game hours below its temperature threshold.
  • Warming before those 6 hours are complete cancels progress toward that stage.
  • Atmosphere already lost does not return.
  • Warming the planet can stop further collapse, but cannot rebuild the atmosphere.
Default thresholds: -175 °C – First 10% atmospheric loss -183 °C – Oxygen enters its cryogenic phase range -196 °C – Nitrogen reaches its normal boiling/condensation point -200 °C – Complete atmospheric collapse Both collapse temperatures are configurable.

Planetary Cooling

Skyfall can now create its own extreme cold. Planetary Cooling gradually lowers the planetary climate until Skyfall's normal atmospheric-collapse thresholds may be reached. It does not directly remove atmosphere. It only creates the cold. Default settings:
  • Final climate offset: -220 °C
  • Duration: 60 days
  • Extremely rare Storyteller base chance: 0.01
Planetary Cooling can start through:
  • A configurable fixed automatic start day
  • A random automatic start window
  • An extremely rare Storyteller event
  • Manual activation
  • The Scenario Editor
Random automatic start days are rolled once per save and are not rerolled by reloading. Cooling target and duration can also be changed while the event is already running.

Odyssey Vacuum Integration

Skyfall uses RimWorld Odyssey's native vacuum mechanics. As atmospheric pressure disappears:
  • Outdoor areas progressively become vacuum.
  • Colonists suffer native Vacuum Exposure and Vacuum Burn.
  • Vacuum suits and helmets work normally.
  • Sealed rooms remain habitable.
  • Odyssey Oxygen Pumps can repressurize protected rooms.
  • The native vacuum/oxygen overlay remains available.
RimWorld – Odyssey is required.

Pressure Wall

Skyfall adds a stuffable airtight Pressure Wall for planetary colonies. It can be built from stone or metal and inherits the properties of its material. Wood is not an option. Because sometimes a wooden hut really should not protect you from outer space.

Scenario Editor

Skyfall includes separate Scenario Editor options for: Atmospheric Collapse
  • Enable / disable collapse
  • First-collapse temperature
  • Complete-collapse temperature
  • Surface weather at complete vacuum
Planetary Cooling
  • Start day
  • Cooling duration
  • Final climate offset

Climate Mod Compatibility

Skyfall does not care what caused the cold. It reads the actual outdoor temperature. Any mod capable of pushing temperatures below Skyfall's configured thresholds should therefore be able to trigger atmospheric collapse.

Tested

Cybranian – Events Global Cooling and Death of Sun can drive the planet into Skyfall temperatures. Death of Sun Tweaks Designed and tested alongside Skyfall. Its configurable Death of Sun and Global Cooling systems work especially well for atmospheric-collapse scenarios.

Expected to work

Disasters (Configurable) Its Temperature Trend changes planetary temperatures and should naturally feed into Skyfall. Disasters (Continued) Its Rogue Planet disaster can push temperatures toward -200 °C or below. Mods listed as Expected to work have not yet been fully tested with Skyfall. No dedicated compatibility patch should normally be required as long as the mod changes the actual outdoor map temperature.

Event Mod Compatibility

Planetary Cooling is implemented as a normal RimWorld incident. Event-management mods can therefore detect it automatically. Vanilla Events Expanded recognizes Planetary Cooling and exposes its event weight alongside other incidents.

One Last Warning

A cold snap can end. A global cooling event can be reversed. A dying star may even be survived. But once part of your atmosphere has fallen out of the sky, Skyfall does not give it back. "The colder the world becomes, the less sky remains."
