The Clone Debt
Every clone you create starts with a hidden creation debt.
Every clone you create starts with a hidden creation debt. When that debt comes due, the clone can snap, hunt the original, and try to replace them.
The Clone Debt adds colony cloning with a real horror cost: free labor and copies of your best pawns, until identity collapses and the copy decides it deserves the original's life.
WHAT IT DOES
- Clone a colonist at a powered Cloning Station (float-menu "Clone self")
- Copies identity details (skills, traits, backstories, appearance - configurable)
- Applies clone markers: artificial clone, clone sickness, creation debt
- Marks the source pawn as original (original identity + anxiety pressure)
- When debt triggers: warning letter, identity collapse, replacement instinct, hunt the original, optional permanent manhunter
- Counterplay buildings: Cleansing Tank (recondition one clone) and Command Beacon (map-wide emergency tools)
- Mood thoughts for clones, originals, and witnesses of clone technology
CLONING STATION (Architect -> Production)
- 2x2 powered pod (200 W), flickable, breakdownable
- Research: Machining
- Cost: 300 steel, 50 plasteel, 8 industrial components
- Select a colonist -> Clone self at cloning station
- Requires industrial medicine on the map (default 10) and power/switch on
- Clone spawns nearby with debt already ticking
CREATION DEBT
- Hidden creation debt hediff on every new clone (timer starts at birth of the copy)
- Random debt window (default ~10-20 days) or fixed days - set in Mod Settings
- Optional: only trigger while the original is still alive
- Trigger chance when due (0-100%)
- On trigger: optional identity collapse severity, manhunter permanent, hunt-original job
- Warning letter when debt comes due
- Optional: remove debt hediff after trigger, or leave it for tracking
- Unreachable original: rage delay, berserk fallback, structure attacks when blocked (settings)
- If the original dies: optional "replacement complete" stabilization on the clone
CLONE CLEANSING TANK (Architect -> Production)
- Powered reconditioning tank (450 W)
- Cost: 250 steel, 50 plasteel, 10 components; research Machining
- Forcibly reboots an unstable clone's identity
- Removes replacement instinct / collapse path and builds loyalty to the original
- Use when a clone is drifting or already triggered
CLONE COMMAND BEACON (Architect -> Production)
- Emergency control beacon (300 W)
- Cost: 200 steel, 25 plasteel, 6 components; research Machining
- Gizmos (requires power / switch on):
- Down all clones - emergency shutdown, downs every artificial clone on the map
- Pacify triggered clones - stops hunt jobs, breaks hostile mental states, clears collapse / replacement instinct
- Recondition all clones - full stabilize: clear debt and hostile effects, add reconditioned / loyal states
- Grant original pride - buff originals with Original Pride
HEDIFFS
- Creation debt, artificial clone, clone sickness
- Original identity, original anxiety, original pride
- Identity collapse, replacement instinct, replacement complete
- Reconditioned clone, loyal to original
MOOD / THOUGHTS
- Clone: I am only a copy, borrowed memories, I deserve their life, identity collapse, second chance
- Original: a copy of me exists, my clone is watching me, I created a clone, I am the original one
- Colony: clone technology is disturbing
- Loyalty / reconditioning thoughts after cleanse
MOD SETTINGS
- Enable / hide creation debt
- Letters on create and on debt due
- Clone copying toggles: skills, traits, backstories, appearance, name
- Clone start affiliation: colonist (default), slave, prisoner, visitor, or enemy
- Debt timer: random min/max days or fixed days
- Trigger chance, only-if-original-alive
- Results: manhunter, identity collapse severity, remove debt after trigger, replacement complete on original death
- Unreachable rage delay, berserk fallback, structure attacks
- Testing: debug countdown messages (dev options)
- Additional toggles for copy rules, manhunter, letters, and unreachable-rage behavior (Mod Settings)
USE CASES
- Storytelling / horror: double your best fighter, then fear them
- Testing combat and mental breaks with controlled copies
- Emergency recovery: cleanse or beacon when a clone goes wrong
- Roleplay: loyal reconditioned copies vs unchained replacements
Clones are never free. The debt always comes due.
